As It Is

Driving on 328 East in South Carolina, somewhere between Saluda and Lexington, heading to the film festival in Columbia.

We had been stopping and grabbing shots as we went: beautiful ruins, roadside unattractions, a mural, anything and nothing- but this scene really blew us away.

This photo is unprocessed from the RAW file: no curve, no saturation adjustment- nada.

It is as we saw it.

Road Trip

On the road and headed to Columbia, SC for the Indie Grits Film Festival

Our documentary The BUGG FARM screens tonight at 7pm. Posted is a screen grab of Addis Bugg from the film.

On the way we are scouting for an upcoming video production outside Lincolnton, GA., and we’ll be getting some footage for G2! in Elgin, SC.

And you know we’re on the backroads exploring and getting the shots.

Looking Up

“Stairwell in the Marais”

This photograph was shot on a visit to Paris in the hotel where we stayed.

This image was shot on film.  Yes- we said film.

FIVE YEARS!

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the premiere of our first doc film GROW! at the Georgia Organics Conference in Savannah GA March 11, 2011.

It has been an amazing journey.

Garnering film festival wins around the world, it continues to inspire young farmers everywhere via iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, and other streaming/download sites.

The BUGG FARM

We’re pleased to announce that our documentary short “The BUGG FARM” is an official selection at the 2016 Indie Grits Film Festival in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Bugg Farm is a tribute to the heritage of strong black farmers who have managed to survive and keep the land in the family for future generations. The farm, which originally comprised over one thousand acres was owned by T.J. Bugg, a former slave who was given the land by the owner of the plantation on which he had toiled. Following in the footsteps of his ancestors, Addis Bugg, the great, great, great grandson of T.J. Bugg has recently returned to the family farm in Georgia to carry on the farm’s legacy and become the 6th generation to farm the land.

Last Resorts

We spend a good part of the year on the road on photo assignments and film projects, and as can be expected, in hotels.

The glamorous world of being photographers can turn into a disorienting nightmare after awhile when the hotels and their rooms (except for the carpets in the hallways- more on that in a later post…) all look the same.

From our “Last Resorts” collection, here we are in Seneca, SC.

HOLGA

Shot on a HOLGA 120S camera (cheap plastic body, plastic lens) with Ilford HP5 Plus, 120 roll, 400 ISO Black and White film.

A well-known camera and a light leaking mess, it does produce amazing images if you know how to finesse it (and tape the body to minimize the leaks).

Notice the beautiful lens distortion at the bottom edges.

Something about the day…

nature  (ˈnāCHər)  noun

the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth: the breathtaking beauty of nature.

A Beautiful Ruin

Since moving to the South from California, we have always made it a point to take the back roads, whether traveling to location for a shoot in a major city or while working on our films which revolve around sustainable farming.

We are inspired by the beauty of decay, the resilience of long abandoned buildings and the
persistence of nature that is special to the South.
