“We renovated this 1972 Charles DuBois home slowly over three years blending Joan’s parents' Danish modern furniture from the 60's with a 70's aesthetic to fit the house. The floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace is one of the very few surfaces we did not redo. It also was the element that most attracted us to an otherwise pretty worn-out 1972 DuBois.

‘The 13-1/2 ft circular couch is from a local consignment store, which was completely rebuilt and recovered in sunny gold velvet, a nod to the favorite color of beloved Palm Springs designer Arthur Elrod. We love the vintage bubble chair which came out of a local home where it hung for 40 years. Joan’s mother sculpted the terra cotta head on the hearth.” -Joan and Barry

“This dress is on the wilder side of my style spectrum and allows my Leo energy to emerge! I've also been fostering kittens for the Palm Springs Animal Shelter for the last three summers, so it was "feline" like the purrfect thing to wear!” -Joan

“Our home is in the Kings Point condo community designed by William Krisel in the late ‘60s. In the sunken living room is our circular Pierre Cardin coffee table. It was the touchstone for our Pierre Cardin obsession which led to collecting everything we could get our hands on including two cars designed by him which eventually led to meeting the man himself and making the documentary House Of Cardin. The circular silver couch surrounding it was conceived by P. David.

“We are wearing matching pink suits by INC International Concepts. We generally don't twin but accidentally ordered two and then wore them to the premiere of our Trini Lopez documentary My Name Is Lopez. They were so much fun we couldn't resist the urge to wear them for the portrait!” -Todd.

A-M: It was a party at Todd and P. David’s house that inspired the portraits. Since we had already collaborated on a number of creative projects together, we approached them about exploring our idea. This is the first portrait we took.

“The giant papier mache sculpture named Lady Godiva rides the Pony Express to Deliver an Xray of the Broken Heart of the Man She Thinks She Loves is by Tijuana artist Benjamin Serrano and has been a constant source of creative conversation. I painted the portrait of Adam West as Batman. Adam was a neighbor and dear friend for a decade and was a huge source of laughter and great advice like, "When the times get tough, we get TUUFFFER!”

I have a forever evolving style. Having gone to “fashiony" Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and "artsy" Art Center College of Design and having worked as an editor for "funky" Paper Magazine, "fancy" Palm Springs Life Magazine and "trendy" Coachella magazine, my style, much like my art, is attitude, texture, and contrasting patterns. I’m usually dressed in a combo of vintage, what I slept in, some lux fashion label and my skateboard.

Kitty or Kittatriana Madison Perry the 3rd is a rare red Shih Tzu from the Himalayas via London and Kentucky to Palm Springs. Bambina is a rare street dog from Tijuana's "Dogs Without Boarders" program.

Having my portrait done was adream come true. Most things never last forever, not the puppies, the home, the looks, the plants but the art you have created of me will last forever and be something I cherish till the end of time. Thank you for seeing me, making me feel important and capturing the essence of who I am in this fleeting moment.”

“We’re fortunate to have so many different seating areas for entertaining in the interior courtyard: we can be found lounging poolside by day or sitting by the firepit in the evenings. The vintage Salterini and John Goode furniture was inherited from our first home in Palm Springs over a decade ago. We had them refurbished and continue to love them today because of their beautiful, simple and classic design aesthetic.

Both of our outfits are from one of our favorite Palm Springs boutiques, Wil Stiles. We loved the idea of black & white to ground ourselves against the vibrant colors in the courtyard.”

A-M: The biggest problem for us was in deciding where to shoot. We could have chosen any room in their beautifully appointed, art filled picture-perfect home. We chose this setting because of its iconic Slim Aarons look and feel, not to mention the blue skies, palm trees, and mountain views typical of Palm Springs.

“I’m not one to decorate a whole house all at once, I wait for inspiration and have in mind what I want, and then wait until I find it. The Rya rug was something I searched for and patiently waited a couple of years until I found the right combination of blues and greens in the right size.

I’ve collected Blenko glass for about 10 years, starting with the orange tones. When we bought this house, I used the turquoise front door as the inspiration for using blues and greens in the living room. Blenko makes several blues, but their actual “Turquoise” has a depth of color that I just love, so I started acquiring pieces of it. I then designed a fireplace wall with shelves to display some of my collection.

The Baldwin Acrosonic piano is one of my favorite things. It was the only mid-century modern teak piano model ever made and very hard to find. I located one in Texas and had it trucked to Palm Springs. I’m obsessed with musical theater, and I enjoy singing and playing show tunes on it.

We are part of the tiki community and like to attend events and see our ‘tiki family’ from all over the world. Jeff’s jacket is a coveted Sandwich Isles jacket from the 1960s and my dress is vintage, made in Hawaii.” -Sue

“As a mid-century modern preservationist, I’m always looking for homes that I can save. This one is in a cul-de-sac and is one of seven model homes that were built in the early ‘60s for homes that would be built on the first 18-hole golf course in Palm Springs. The architect is Hugh Kaptur. I had my eye on this one for a long time until the original owners were finally ready to sell in 2019. It turns out I bought a time capsule – they left everything including art, books, dishes, and the outdoor furniture seen here.

“I like clothes from the ‘80s. My bell bottom slacks with diagonal slash pockets are Magic Stretch by Haggar. My shirt is vintage cotton from Cuba and my glasses are vintage aviators. You will rarely see me without a hat, day or night.” -Mitch

“Palm Springs is a place that thrives on themed parties and galas that transport people to another time and luckily, I’m invited to DJ for many of them. My closet is literally overflowing with vintage outfits for any occasion and during “High Season” from October to June I never wear the same thing twice. Here I’m wearing a ‘60s wiggle dress which gets its name from the fact that it’s cut so narrow at the hemline that you can’t walk, you must wiggle.” -Kellee

A-M:Shannon and Blair were an integral part of the group who had originally inspired the project, so we really wanted to include them. They had been leasing a condo and admitted that there was probably not a shot there. They were right. However, they had just purchased a home which they were in the process of renovating. Thinking that it might make for an interesting portrait we asked to see it. As soon as we walked in, we knew that was it! The rubble was going to be carted away the next afternoon, so we had to get the shot the next morning.

“Candelabras are my weakness; if I could live only with candlelight I would. Nothing is comparable… I like flickering moments throughout the rooms which allow the eye to wander. The brass candelabra near the window belonged to Peter’s grandmother.

It came from Russia.

The Gold Lips print on aluminum is by local artist Marquis Leo. I love lips as a symbol because words flow from them. The Eames wire chairs have been in Peter’s family since the ‘60s. The cushions were originally orange, but they had become too worn so we replaced them.

Peter is wearing a vintage Gucci corduroy jacket and Gucci Kingsnake leather loafers. I am wearing vinyl boots and vinyl leggings with a jacket that I redesigned. My glasses are by Celine.” -Sabine

“I found the wrought iron scalloped edge patio set deteriorating for $30 at a local consignment shop. I had my trainer weld the broken pieces and along with a friend, I spray painted the set white. Since it is a set of two tables I hosted a few very socially distanced dinner parties during Covid but have yet to really use them that way again. Ha!

I love picking lemons to keep in the house for color and for making lemonade in the summer. I usually entertain casually in my backyard, sharing a joint and listening to some music or watching my friends’ dogs run around.

I bought the 1960s plaid linen Abercrombie and Fitch blazer at a vintage shop in Paris. I felt it exemplified the desert’s aesthetic. The pants are Gucci, and the shoes and oxford shirt are Ralph Lauren.”

“We’re a creative director team working in advertising as Dietzworkz. We also collaborate on art projects with painting (Aaron) and embroidery (Mandy).”

“One of our favorite features of the living room is how much the outdoors trickles in. With all the windows and the mirror, we are surrounded by hummingbirds, butterflies, trees and flowers- it’s like being inside a reverse terrarium.

The pink bunny glows in the dark; Aaron found it at a Flea Market years ago, and it has lived with us in three San Francisco apartments before moving to Palm Springs.We love the piece we call “Wigzilla” because it mixes vintage style with science fiction and neon!

Our wardrobes shrank when we moved to Palm Springs due to the lack of seasons but got a lot more colorful.Mandy's wearing a vintage lace dress from the ‘70s. She added a black tie around the waist that her mother wore as a neck bow in the ‘80s. Aaron’s shirt is a favorite from Mokuyobi, based in LA, and he converted his white vintage Oakley sunglasses into glasses.

Bash is our 4-year-old chihuahua who is sweet with us but has been known to bite people who are not us. Mochi snuck into frame at the 11th hour. Can you spot her?”

“My husband had recently passed, and I wanted to create a fresh new space for this next chapter in my life. I was going for the overall warmth of a 70’s color scheme combined with a futuristic look.

As an artist I tend toward graphics, so I wanted to do a late ‘60s/early ‘70s inspired wall treatment. Googling “supergraphics” for inspiration I came across one that extended up the wall and on to the ceiling. Using that as my cue I designed this one to provide a visual separation between the kitchen and living room.

Even though I edited a lot from the last house I still have a multitude of things that I have collected over the years. I once worked as a merchandiser for retail and luckily it gave me the skills needed to take a lot of stuff and make it not look like hoarding.

I had Starsky and Hutch in mind when I chose what I would wear for the shoot. Then I added orange plastic pearls.”

“Our walls are white because as artists, our brains are always busy. It's a Zen mental canvas thatallows our thoughts to flow without being influenced before they bloom.

“Grandma's green resin grapes are a family heirloom. Because Jen loved them the most in the family, her uncle shipped them to her shortly after Grandma's passing because he knew she would display them as Grandma did on the coffee table. The chrome lamps also belonged to her.

“The Fender guitar was a gift to Kemble, from a vintage collector who wanted Kemble to have it to give it "life!" The Gibson bass was also gifted to Kemble for live performances. It's the first-year production of its kind.

“Jen is wearing the "Blake" vegan silk dress from her collection and Kemble is wearing a Straight to Hell vegan leather Moto jacket. Being animal activists and long-time vegans, we try to support cruelty free collections.

“This was an incredible experience! It's always a good time when you jam "Sex Pistols radio" and everyone on set is rocking out! Being fairly new to the desert, this experience just reminded us of how magical this place is and how it brings people together in its own unique and creative way!” -Kemble and Jen

“One wild night between Tony Duquette, Diana Vreeland, and Iris Apfel a love child was born... ME!

“I’m obsessed with the two large pieces of art above my sofa. Oh, what I love affair I have had with these two. I stalked this art for about 3 years in the hopes one day they would be mine. They are by the brilliant Palm Springs artist, Samuel Fleming-Lewis.

The Drexel octagonal coffee table has been in my family since 1964. My mother fell madly in love with Drexel and did our living room in the most magnificent pieces. All the pieces have been living happily with me for a few decades now and until my end they will be loved by me.

“On a recent trip to Morocco we were on a quest to find the perfect Berber rug for our living room. After days of shopping in the Medinas of Tangier and Marrakesh and looking over so many amazing works of art it wasn’t until the very last day of our trip that we finally discovered the rug that was to be the one we brought home. The rug is our favorite piece in the room.

We both had something different in mind to wear for our portrait but in the final moments of getting dressed we pulled together what you now see. I am wearing a Gucci shirt with Celine pants and Analisa is wearing a dress by Camilla and jewelry by Beth Orduna from our shop Elizabeth & Prince.

When you’re used to being the person behind the camera or styling someone else for an event, being the subject of a portrait could feel unfamiliar and strange. Sitting for our portrait with Christine and Owen however felt like having coffee with old friends- the kind of friends you know you can trust to tell you when you have pepper in your teeth.” -Shawn

A-M: Three dogs! And they’re ‘well trained’? Seriously? Turns out they were once Ron got them into position. Usually when shooting pets, we clap or call their name to get them to look at the camera. In this case Ron and Rachel told us to make these funny kissing noises to get their attention. We felt ridiculous, but hey, we got the shot.

“There’s no way for me to live without creating something so I’ve designed my living space around that concept. This is my first time living alone and I have the freedom to do it; instead of a living room I have a studio.

“The painting of the woman on the couch is a portrait of my ex-girlfriend, Bella. It was painted over the course of our relationship. To finish it we will be collaborating on a collage with the materials in the paper bags. Above me is a reductive painting I did of my brother yelling. I found the dalmatian in the corner in an abandoned house in Joshua Tree. Another ex-girlfriend made the sailor hat out of an Eggo waffle box. Everything in the frame is a work in progress.

“I’m wearing a Ted Baker suit jacket with a favorite shirt I’ve had since high school. It’s faded a little over the years, but I like the way it has progressed.”

“The Helmut Newton photo of me on the hearth was taken around 1974/75 while I was living in a fabulous loft on W. 20^th in Chelsea. Franklyn Welsh (the best make-up/hair artist ever) was doing a fashion shoot with Helmut Newton for Oui magazine. Helmut had invited us to dinner, and when he and Franklyn came to fetch me, he asked if he could snap a few quickies of me with his instamatic camera. I donned a vintage fuchsia satin robe, and he used only the existing light in my bedroom. He kept making me laugh by telling me that he loved my nipples. It all took about ten minutes tops, and he got the most amazing photos, the one by my fireplace being my favorite. I had once gifted that particular print to Rufus Wainwright. He had it framed and hanging in his home for a few years. But when he and I had a falling out of sorts, he gave it back to me for some reason. Silly boy- it's a Helmut Newton! Anyway, I set it down where it is temporarily, but after a while decided that's where it would stay.

Yes, I actually use the rainbow hula hoop and I’m pretty good at it too! Displaying it on my wall as art is my contribution to the LGBTQ movement. The fireplace is totally functional, but it's usually too hot for a fire in Palm Springs, so hence an orange light bulb. The look without the heat.”

A-M: Needless to say, it was an honor for us to shoot the legendary Cherry Vanilla.

A-M: This shot was taken poolside at The Sandpiper in Palm Desert, one of the first condo communities in the Coachella Valley, built from 1958 to 1969 and designed by William Krisel. Kudos to these two, especially Kenny in his suit and cravat. It was 114° that day but we had to get the shot before they started the annual trimming of the palm trees seen in the background.

“This is the outdoor patio at my home in Rancho Mirage, an homage to Morocco. I do find living in the desert similar to Marrakesh with the view of the mountains covered with snow in the winter and the palm trees. I spend a lot of time out here on the patio in the winter and in the fall enjoying the lighting and the drama and the beauty of the desert seen through the frame of my Moroccan terrace.

I have collected a few caftans and this particular one is my favorite. It was designed and created by Ali Ramani a great designer in Hollywood. It was custom made for me.”

A-M: As shooters, we loved the idea of shooting other shooters for the project. A mutual friend suggested Michael and provided the introduction. Unsure of what to expect from such a famous photographer, any apprehensions immediately dissolved as soon as we walked in the door. Michael was verywarm and gracious in welcoming us to his home and generous with his compliments on our portraits. He gave us free rein to find our shot and when we settled on his patio, he simply agreed that the light was the best there. We returned the next week for the shoot, and he hung back while we rearranged some of the furniture and set up our camera. When we were ready, he sat down, found his pose and within a few captures we had what we came for.

“If I had to do all white it would only be a matter of moments before I added color!

My love of Mykonos inspired my outdoor oasis for the patio which is nestled up against the San Jacinto Mountains. The chandelier was a gift from a friend who knew I liked monkeys. One day it showed up on my doorstep with a ribbon on it. The iron headboard was left by the previous owners as were the rust patina lanterns.

I’ve always had geraniums in the garden in every home I’ve lived in. I love them because of the saturated bold colors of their flowers.

I’ve been interested in style since I was a little girl, which comes from my Mom. She was very stylish and designed and made our outfits. With all my clothes I like things that I have to figure out how to wear them for best effect. My purple caftan just hung in my closet because I always felt that it was too short. For my portrait I added the striped silk palazzo pants which solved that problem. I love big, bold jewelry. I believe that you can always do big if you do silver.”

“What grabbed me about the portrait of Frida Kahlo was her look of elegant defiance which I believe exemplifies my life.

I’ve had a lifelong love of flying; I got my first pilot’s license in Austria for a glider when I was 14, so most of my furniture is aviation related. The sliding door to my bedroom is a C-130 escape hatch mounted on an ironwood frame. Molten silver was poured into the cracks in the wood to create the design.

I picked up the chrome and leather dining room set over 30 years ago when I moved to the desert. At the time, nobody was interested in that sort of thing, so it was relatively inexpensive. I’m a visual person so I always have fresh flowers on the table.

I am wearing a traditional Austrian hunting jacket which I earned by possessing certain skills and passing stringent written and oral tests.”

“We both love the aesthetic of mid-century vintage and thrifted home décor, clothing, and accessories. The sustainability factor is especially important in this time of fast-fashion and unethical practices. It just feels right to keep using a perfectly good item rather than buy something brand new.

Like so many others I became interested in houseplants during the pandemic. Begonias stole my heart right away. The structure, color and foliage of each plant really added to the overall design and welcoming feel of our home.

I’m wearing a 1930s/’40s cotton striped dress. It’s one of my absolute favorite pieces- beyond the dreamy fabric, pleats, and shoulder shape, it’s extremely comfy. My bracelet and earrings are a vintage set, and the pumps are vintage too.

I truly had no idea WHAT to expect when Christine and Owen came to scout our home…

We are no strangers to posing for fun in this house, but the shoots have always been preplanned and we knew what ‘characters’ we were playing.

The sultry couple floated through our home like two alluring spirits looking for ‘the shot’.

“I wanted to match the gold accents throughout the house, so I chose a long shimmery dress. I aspire to be the woman in our portrait- after a glam night on the town, coming home, collapsing on the lounge, and kicking off my shoes.” -Athalie

“Six years ago, I started having to make decisions for others in my business. I decided then that I would wear a black tee shirt, jeans, and a jacket to simplify my life. I’m from Turkey where some sort of neckwear is always worn. When I came to Palm Springs, I started wearing this style.” -Adnan

“My home was hand built in 1936 by a man who hauled all the rocks from Eagle Mountain, about an hour from here. The house sits in the middle of a large piece of land that has trees, hundreds of cacti and is home to a lot of wildlife. I have been blessed with spending time around all this nature.

When I was a kid my friends and I would ride by on our bikes and dare each other to enter believing that there was a mean ogre type troll who lived in the house. I left Palm Springs when I was 17 and returned 21 years later and eventually ended up moving into the ‘troll’s’ house. I have been its caretaker for 29 years.

The house inspired me to appreciate old and weathered things such as the rust and wood pieces I have assembled into artworks and placed on the house and around the property. The metal fountain to my right was created from a rusted, banged up car fender that was given to me by a friend.

My necklace belonged to my mother. It’s from Northern Thailand and is their equivalent of a Swiss Army knife. It has two knives, a tweezer, a screwdriver, and a few other things whose use I have not yet determined. I always go barefoot when I’m here and if the Earthing movement is correct, I should live forever.”

“When we lived in Los Angeles in the mid-90s we had great good luck finding a lot of our furniture, lamps and art in various thrift stores and rummage sales around town. The couch, chairs and Dual turntable came to us later when we were living in the South.

The gold leaf artwork was a $10 unsightly painting with interesting texture that Christine repurposed by gold leafing the canvas and allowing it to patina. Owen created the red wood sculpture that sits on top of the speaker next to his Fender Telecaster that he’s played since he was 16. The Emmy in the credenza is one of two we won for our second documentary film in 2015.

Christine is wearing a silk kimono by a local designer. Owen is wearing a reptile patterned metallic tuxedo jacket he picked up at a shop downtown when we moved to Palm Springs. Ever the dandy, he always sports some sort of neckwear.

We set up the shot in our living room and put the camera on timer for ten exposures at a time. We’d review, re-set and repeat until we were finally happy with the outcome. It was tricky because there was no one behind the camera providing guidance, direction, and styling as we did for all the other portraits in this project.” -Christine and Owen

“For my bedroom I was going for a sexy masculine ‘60s and ‘70s era bachelor pad look. I added a little glam with the chrome and mirrors which I believe warm a room instantly.

My favorite piece of art hangs over the bed. It’s by local Palm Springs artist Roma Bogard, who worked in the late ‘50s – ‘70s. She had a huge stash of canvases which she finally let go of in the 2000s and I was able to pick up three at a local consignment store.

I’m wearing SP Evolution Paris vintage denim bell bottoms that I bought in a vintage clothing shop when I lived in Phoenix. When I travel, I collect jewelry, both men’s and women’s. I chose the bangle to warm up the dark tones of my clothing much as the chrome and mirrors warm the room.”

“Our home exudes our passion for collecting one-of-a-kind artisan antiques from as far back as the 18th century from placessuch as Egypt and Asia. The floor-to-ceiling original oil painting was gifted to Coach by the late New York-based fashion and art icon Esteban. The piece is called America: Home of the Free and Land of the Brave. We love history and supporting indigenous artists.

The dress was bought locally in one of my favorite places to shop in Palm Springs. It’s a vintage handmade brocade and gold stitched dress with a slit. I initially picked it up but almost shied away from it, but my girlfriend told me that I could not walk out of there without that dress. She knew that it stands for everything to me: passion, artistry, handmade, and gives the energy of quiet power! The slit brings out my "sexpot" fantasies.

Dave is my private Ken doll!! He is strong, quiet, smart, and rugged. The designer we often choose for him is Ralph Lauren and the fabric speaks volumes about how we love to live with texture. It’s cashmere.” -Coach Lynn

"My home is a reflection of who I am: whimsical and a bit quirky.

I fell in love with the mountains and architecture and moved to Palm Springs from NYC during Covid.

The IKB coffee table by Yves Klein was left to me by my very first friend in Palm Springs. The frame is made of plexiglass with a glass top, the inside is filled with International Klein Blue pigment. The Red Lobster bench was created by local artist Isaac Valesquez from stuffed animals and is very comfortable. I recently acquired the woven wool lungs by another local artist, Adriana Lopez Espina. It's a prototype for a grant she received to find solutions to the pollution around the Salton Sea.

I’m sitting in my Tucker Robbins Human Chair which is carved from one piece of acacia wood and is meant to bring prosperity to anyone who sits in it.

My dress and shoes are by young Japanese designers. The shoes are like walking on clouds."

“When we first bought our home in early 2020, it looked (and smelled) like a witness protection motel, but she had great bones! We painted the walls, removed the carpet, and installed custom glass and iron doors and windows to let in as much light as possible. We added textured wall covering in the bar and entertainment areas in blue, a color we both love. It was such a rewarding transformation, especially since we had to do everything during the beginning of the pandemic when no one even had toilet paper.

Michael Childers is a very dear friend of ours, and we are honored to own several of his gorgeous photographs. We love having such a personal connection to our art- and knowing the stories behind them. That includes his large photograph of a ballet dancer posing upside down on a Montana tree trunk.

Both of us love tribal art, and since I was a kid, I've collected masks from the countries I've visited. Since David is Australian, there are touches of Down Under throughout our home, including aboriginal art and boomerangs. On the bar are three Emmys for my work in telling people's stories in television news.

One day, I arrived home to find David unloading colorful clothing from the trunk of our car. He had stopped at an estate sale in Cathedral City and bought the entire wardrobe. When he showed me the sparkly vintage jackets, I rolled my eyes. Turns out, I ended up having to eat my words because I now wear those jackets all the time at various galas that I host.” -Peter

“As a designer the use of color is very important to me. I designed the living room with the cool colors of blues, greens and purple and the dining room and bar area in more nurturing warm tones.

A lot of the décor in our home comes from Dallas where we lived before Palm Springs. The wood screen behind the sofa is one of many that I “rescued” from a house that was about to be demolished. Some were installed in our Dallas home, but we saved the others and have now put them to good use here. The David head in the hallway was a thrift store find. I put a spotlight on him because I wanted to give him the importance of a museum display.

Charlie Boy is our beloved Parti Poodle. He is the sweetest dog and loves to jump in our pool and swim.

The Pachira Aquatica (money tree) is a Feng Shui element of my personality and environment. My two favorite artists who provide inspiration are Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat. “Our designer quit during Covid, so we ended up doing most of the interior design ourselves. We shopped at consignment stores, online and anywhere we could find things. A lot of the art came from Melissa Morgan Fine Art in Palm Desert. We did this together and had fun and because of that it’s our favorite home.

We bought interesting art, not necessarily important art, although some of the pieces are. The sculpture in the foreground is made of bicycle chains. The masks on either side of the fireplace were done by Dale Dunning and are made from wire rope and steel nails. The small sculpture on the table behind us was done by Rivington Pyne, Joe’s brother.

A friend of mine owns an alligator farm and gave me the skull on the mantle. I painted it white and ‘bedazzled’ it. I also gave it a gold tooth and stuck a Jeff Koons balloon dog in its mouth which was inspired by an article about him questioning if he was a real artist or just a good promoter.

I am wearing a beach cover up with a tee shirt, shorts, and Gucci shoes. I believe it does not matter if it’s a name designer or not, it’s how you wear it and I’ve worn this outfit to many high-end galas.” -Tina

We bought our condo in Canyon View Estates in 2010. We loved the panoramic views of the San Jacinto Mountains and no power lines. The development was built in 1963 and designed by William Krisel. The breeze blocks are Mei Ling. The gate was originally white, and we added the blue which is the color scheme we used throughout our home.

The Peacock Blue 1956 Ford Thunderbird is a recent acquisition we rescued from obscurity from a small town in Washington to its rightful home in Palm Springs. Her name is Doris Day, and she is in high demand during Modernism Week to make appearances throughout Palm Springs.

Keith’s vintage sparkly jacket was found at a secondhand store in Los Angeles. His loafers are by Robert Graham. Chris is wearing one of his favorite Bugatchi shirts and a pair of never-worn, interwoven leather Vans that were hiding in his closet. His sunglasses are by Mykita.

“My dad was one of the founding members of the Polynesian Society in US. He was a huge lover of Hawaiian culture and especially the music. He started playing with some of the great Hawaiian singers & bands in the ‘50s and also at all the Polynesian luaus. So, when I grew up all our furniture was rattan, tikis, grass rugs, Hawaiian music, decor, and tiki bars.” -Siouxzan

“When Sooz and I got together in 2011, two Tiki worlds united. I was born in New Zealand and lived there until I was four. My parents had developed an appreciation of Māori life and culture and when we sailed back to the UK, they had brought large tea chests full of several artifacts, photos and Polynesian music. Among the artifacts were three Māori Tiki masks which hung in our house and watched over us throughout our childhood. At one point I made rubbings of the masks and after Siouxan and I moved in together I created the velvet paintings based on the rubbings which are hanging to my left in our Tiki Room.

She was also a good friend and when she died, she left me in charge of all her memorabilia, so we have a lot of her stuff all over the house. “Living in a mid-century unit that sits high in the hills and below two famed Lautner homes, it was important to capture the mid-century lines and forms of that era in choosing the dining room chairs and table. The painting and the neutral tones in the remainder of the space help to keep a sense of level and grounding because my home is cantilevered into the hillside.

In my opinion, a home should be a reflection of a man’s own sense of self. A mirror frames this notion in a way that is both aesthetic and forces self-reflection; what I love about this vintage mirror is that it was laid out with light and dark shadows and compartmentalized with the patina of age much like we all are as people. This form of reflection allows one to realize that even in an elegant setting, there lies a contrast of both primal instincts and refined sensibilities. The painting of the baboon and the various nods to animal figures; the crocodile textured ice bucket and cowhide rug reinforce this theme that reminds us that we are a mix of various primal energies.

I’ve always loved the quality of craftsmanship in art objects from the past especially when they capture nature in abstract form as in the ‘60s Stanescu brass bison seen in the background, along with the Art Deco brass lion and the ebony female sculpture on the bar.

But what brings me the most joy and lights up the entire house is Red, my Standard Poodle rescue.”

“The rocking chairs on our porch are our favorite place to be. Sunrises and sunsets, birds, friends, laughter and tears, our porch is magic.

We did not discuss what to wear, we both chose our standard black uniforms. For us art and nature are central to our lives, we choose not to distract or embellish.

Our portrait was taken a few days before we were married on the property, and we loved it so much we consider it our wedding portrait.” -Melissa

A-M: We loved the sense of place that the porch provided with the round rocks and flora typical of the upper desert.

We first went to scout at mid-day and once we figured out where the portrait would be shot, knew that we wanted late afternoon light from the setting sun. It’s a bit of a trek to Pioneertown from Palm Springs and gas prices were astronomical at the time so we relied on Eric to send shots of the location at various points in the afternoon. This was actually shot at almost 8:00 pm in the golden light of Magic Hour. Luckily, we got this one quickly, two frames later the light was unacceptable.

“I'm passionate about architecture and design- which is one of the main reasons I moved to Palm Springs.When this house came on the market in the Twin Palms neighborhood, I jumped on it! It needed a lot of work- but I had fun creating my dream mid-century home.

Orange is my favorite color- so the front door had to be orange to contrast with the dark house color and dramatic door handle!

I wanted to get a convertible when I moved to Palm Springs and thought I would get a VW Bug- but then I saw a Nissan Figaro and knew I had to have one. It's great fun to drive and I love seeing people's reactions to it!

Diva is a Standard Poodle and my constant companion. She's smart, playful, and protective."

A-M: Christine discovered Carol and Diva while riding her bike one morning. “I noted that Carol had an interesting look and loved that her hair color matched her dog’s fur.” Later, we saw Carol driving our favorite car in all of Palm Springs and knew we wanted Carol, Diva and the car for the project. Then one day we saw the car parked in front of this house and knew it was the shot.

“I love color! It makes me happy. Every morning when I walk into this room, I am grateful to be here. This room is decorated with a concoction of things acquired during my lifetime. I have had three husbands and lived in much larger homes but through the years I have winnowed it down to only my favorite pieces, things that mean something to me. This is the home I am happiest in.

I started acquiring art as a young housewife in the ‘50s using some of my grocery money; fifty dollars here and there. As time went on, I was able to collect more expensive art with my husbands. In the background is a Miro. Really, I just acquire things that please me. I picked up the pink heart below the Miro at a local art fair.

I designed my jacket which is based on the Chanel classic cut. The fabric is Chanel, and I added the orange chiffon ruffles. My pants are silk organza. I picked up my gold and orange Mexican opal ring in the ‘60s. The opal is held in place by a circle of people. It reminded me of my 5 children when they were little and would encircle an orange parachute and toss it into the air to billow. My twisted gold ring is by David Webb, underneath it is a Cartier gold Trinity ring which I always wear as a reminder of the three men in my life.”

“My love of everything tropical stems from the sun. I get my energy from the sun, and nothing makes me feel more alive than to be surrounded by its warmth and light. Indeed, the sun is one of the main reasons that I moved to Palm Springs.

When I moved into my new home, I happened to find the bar. It was one of those serendipitous moments where you find just the right piece that anchors everything else into place. I already had the bamboo shelving unit which fit the alcove perfectly, providing a wonderful backdrop for all my tiki treasures.

Most of the pieces, like the mugs and masks, have been collected over the years at different tiki events and I'm always looking for more. The larger pieces, such as the bar stools and the large woven mats on the wall were found locally at consignment stores and resale shops. Palm Springs is full of vintage tiki decor if you know where to look!

The quetzal, national bird of Guatemala was gifted to me by a dear friend and is a constant reminder ofmy heritage.

“The house was built in 1920 and needed some work. Ruben did all the stonework on the hearth and added the metal brackets holding up the mantel. Most of the items came from thrift stores, some are gifts from friends and family. The violin belonged to my brother-in-law. He was going to throw it away. He just didn't want it, so I salvaged it. I love it even though nobody plays it.

The bookcase came from an estate sale in Palm Springs at a home that was once owned by a famous Spanish actress. I don't recall her name, but she was beautiful. She had ivory skin and jet-black hair. The chair in front of it belonged to my aunt, she gave it to my mom and my mom gave it to me. The seat is hand embroidered.

My shawl was a gift from a friend who brought it to me from a trip to Mexico. I wore it because it's a reflection of my culture & heritage. The beautiful bright color is as vivid as our home. Although I wasn't born in Mexico, I love my roots and history. The brooch belonged to my aunt Kika. She loved flashy jewelry!” -Yaya

“When I bought this house, the kitchen was very small. I designed the space to accommodate all my baking tools and kitchen gadgets while keeping the mid-century vibe. I kept the original Starburst breezeblock window that was used in all of the condos in Canyon View Estates Phase 2, built in 1963. I love the shadows it casts on the ceiling in the morning. I added shelves to display several pieces of vintage ceramics; McCoy, Hull, California Pottery, Haeger and Fiestaware, plus a few Brazilian pieces. I also added Empoli Genie glass decanters in different colors. I love to watch the colorful light reflections they create. These pieces bring color to the space and a smile to my face.

I’m wearing an early ‘70s vintage knit jumpsuit- I love the colorful print. My inner teenager was asking for it!”

“A few years back I went with a friend to look at a condo they were thinking about buying at Park Imperial South, the iconic mid-century modern style community with folded plate roofs built by Barry Berkus in 1960. They passed on it and without thinking I decided to buy it. I paid cash and moved in a week after it closed.

All I had to do was paint the walls white. My unit was mostly original including the hanging lamp over the bar. I decided to keep the cork floor because I liked the patina and character it brings to each room. I collect vintage furniture from the ‘50s and ‘60s so furnishing it was no problem. I also collect contemporary and vintage art which I use to provide pops of color throughout.

Out of everything I’ve ever collected, Pool Table by Freshwest Designs is my most favorite. The way the light is reflected and refracted through the 50cm acrylic makes it look like a real swimming pool, especially with the addition of a miniature diving board.

“I was born in Oklahoma and have lived in New Mexico, Kansas, and California, so my style has evolved into what might be called tropical cowgirl.

“I bought the Coral Sands Motel in Palm Springs in 2000. As I was hanging my painting of Jane Russel, Theresa Wright, and Maureen O’Hara, the former owner’s son happened by and told me that the motel was originally built for the Los Angeles Rams and that Jane Russel had actually stayed there with her husband who was a quarterback for the team.

I rescued the taxidermied Caribou shoulder mount from a dumpster. I cleaned it up and gave it a place of honor in my home which I call “Peekabou Palace.”

I’m wearing a vintage cotton Happi coat- beautiful, comfortable and a favorite. The bolo tie is a nod to my cowgirl sensibility.

Right before I sold my motel in Palm Springs a parakeet flew in. I captured him with my hands and soon found another parakeet to be his companion. These boys are an incredible source of joy. I keep their cage door open, and they are free to fly around the room.”

A-M: While Ruby was getting ready, we started setting up the shot. The “free range” birds became very excited and started flying about like crazy, so it was a bit of a challenge shifting furniture and dodging birds. While we were shooting Ruby the birds finally managed to settle down and we were able to get all three subjects into the shot.

“We like to surround ourselves with things that will make the most weird and wonderful estate sale when we are gone.

Our favorite piece in the whole house is the Jean-Michel Basquiat on the mantel. Second favorite is the Barbies piece entitled After Midnight featuring every ethnicity of Barbie (and Ken) partnered up, so to speak. We had seen one similar and debated too long on whether or not to buy it. When we went back for it, it had sold. So, I started buying Barbies from eBay and decided to recreate a similar piece. The end result is far larger than the original and far more detailed.” -Charlie

A-M: We usually declined unsolicited portrait requests, but we were intrigued when Charlie reached out to us to inquire if we were interested in shooting a throuple. Always on the lookout for something different, we scheduled a scout. As soon as we walked in the door, we knew this had the potential for a great shot. When it came to wardrobe possibilities, we had to decide whether to shoot them in the usual leather fetish attire they wear when going out to clubs in Palm Springs. We decided that the portrait would be more interesting if the viewer was allowed the opportunity to discover the Banfields’ interests by looking more closely at their décor.

“When it came to decorating our condo in Palm Springs, my Mom and I wanted to recreate my childhood home from the ‘70s. Our home in Beverly Hills had a lot of Regency with some mid-century modern and a lot of Lucite furniture. We also had swivel chairs in the living room.

There are so many good vintage furniture shops for one of a kind finds here that we were able to source a lot of things locally; the Lucite coffee table and etageres, side table and little stools were all bought locally. We found the big abstract painting the same day that we closed on the house.” -Alison

“We hadn’t shared the same home since Alison was a teenager but luckily when it came to finding furniture and décor for this house we were drawn to the same things, and it was fun starting from scratch. “Before we bought the home in 2020, it had been continuously owned by members of the family who owned the marquee Los Angeles restaurant, Chasen's from 1936 to 1995. It was famous for its signature Chili and the many celebrities, politicians, and personalities who graced its booths. We wanted to preserve much of that mid-century Hollywood grandeur in our extensive renovations of the home.

The pergola is original to the house, which was built in 1961, and reflects the impact of the 1960 Rome Olympics on a few select mid-century modern homeowners in Palm Springs including Maude Chasen. The striped valences on the pergola were inspired by photos we found of what the home looked like in the 1960s.

A-M: When we showed up for the scout, we weren’t sure who we would be shooting,the Lambs or the Clearances, having decided to leave it up to them. When it came time to discussing wardrobe we were delighted when Justin asked if he could wear a dress.

“Dancing in the dirt is my happy place. I’ve had many dance sessions in my yard. I taught classes there during Covid and have made many fun dance videos there. It's also where I meditate, connect to Gaia and remember what's really important. The pink flamingos make me so happy it is my dream to fill my yard with them one day.

My look is half burlesque costume and half some of my fave pieces. I chose it because it makes me feel like a powerful goddess when I wear it.”

A-M: Burlesque queen of the desert, pin up girl and no stranger to posing seductively, that’s the DD that the public knows. We wanted to shoot Diana, to get to the inner core of the sensitive, private person that she is. But that can take some time. We had it because we wanted to explore full harsh sunlight raking in (great for fashion photography but not for our portrait series). By the time the sun had set behind the San Jacinto Mountains to the west giving us the soft light that we needed, she trusted us enough to fully let go and finally give us Diana.

“The event of catching the fish was such an outstanding moment and I felt that it begged for an important placement in the home – the living room. I liked the quirkiness and irony of “a fish out of water” in the desert. We backed its location with plaster waves to intensify the effect.

“Gris is our little luv. He's 10 and has modeled and been photographed and appeared in videos all his life. He's never met a stranger or buxom woman he didn't like.”

A-M: Gris was undoubtedly the easiest dog in the project to photograph. He found his mark, struck his pose and that was it.

“Because the dome is painted all white, people have asked if the raw wood stairway is under construction, if it is "finished". I love the contrast of raw and polished. My bright, white geodesic dome already sticks out like a bubble in the Mojave. The interaction of nature and culture is essential to me. And obviously so are the nearly 100 indoor houseplants. On the wall is one of my paintings- an oil on canvas 9 ft x 7 ft. triptych.

My silk camisole is a piece I made nearly a decade ago- a cross between art and fashion, it keeps getting better over the years. I use them in my performances, bleached by the sun, frayed, and hanging on by a thread. I considered going barefoot which is a preferred lifestyle, a connection to the earth's energy. The typical choice would have been heels- stilettos, my personal favorite from a past life. But here, in the wild raw desert of Joshua Tree, I live amongst rattlesnakes, scorpions, and black widows. So boots it is. And not cleaned up or "shined” but rough, dirty, old boots with authentic caked on desert dirt.

During the Covid years I hadn't seen my hairdresser or had it cut at all. It's been really fun to let it grow naturally.”

“I admire the design work of Florence Knoll, so during the early days of the pandemic when everyone was redecorating, I channeled her by using pieces she designed or would use in her jobs. I was particularly inspired by her interior work for offices she did for the Saarinen designed CBS building in NY in 1964. I especially liked her use of bold colors along with blacks and whites. I love my kitchen shown in the background. In 2006 the artist Philip K Smith designed it for me based on the original kitchen that William Krisel did for these Twin Palms tract houses, adding some fun quirks to make it his own.

Brick is my Boston terrier and really my best friend. He is sweet and always happy and seems very attached to me too.

Jil Sander is one of my favorite designers, so the t-shirt and shoes are from her. I tend to like minimalism. The pants, in this case are decidedly not but I thought they would channel the leisure life that is Palm Springs.”

A-M: Owen discovered Reid and Mark one day when they were doing their daily morning fashion photo shoot for Mark’s Instagram page. We have been privy to many people’s closets, but Mark’s really topped them all. He opened the door to reveal a 12 ft long expanse of suits and jackets organized by color. It was like a rainbow!

A-M: People often wonder how much is staged in the portraits. We may move a couple pieces of furniture and décor to create a better composition. In this case we turned the couch on the right around. It had been turned the other way for movie viewing during COVID. We also removed a few pieces as we saw fit and made a couple of suggestions as to what might be on the coffee table.

My mother had a lot of books and I loved all of the graphics and type on them. Brigitte also grew up with wall-to-wall books as her father was a German professor in Irvine. So, when I suggested the idea of a library/dining room for our Seven Lakes Country Club condo she was all for it, especially since we removed the solid wall that was like a tunnel that guests would have to go through on the way to their bedroom. Now the hallway has light passing between the books.” -Andre

“I've always been a collector of vintage items; too many categories to list but I've had an affinity for ’50s Mexicana, cowboy, and cabin type things.

When I bought my vintage 1957 Empire trailer in Palm Springs in 2012, I decided to give it a Western theme. We dubbed it the ‘Giddy up Getaway.’ The central painting of the Hereford bull was a birthday gift from a good friend of mine given to me right after I bought the trailer. I knew immediately that it would be the anchor on this wall for all the other paintings and photographs that I'd collected over the years. Other favorites are the kids-on-ponies photos, the tiny diorama of cacti and the odd little embroidered flag that says “Trailer Amigos.”

I'm wearing a vintage Todd Oldham wood grain print silk shirt circa 1996. I guess that counts as vintage, right? At least a millennial would think so. I like my orange suede loafers. Palm Springs is a great backdrop for bright, bold colors.

Fritzi is pretty much the best dog ever. She's super sweet, pretty smart, and has a silly and humorous disposition. Not to mention cute as a button. I adopted her a year ago and she's exactly what I wanted and needed in my life. I love my birds too, but they have each other.”

“We always try to buy art or interesting pieces on our travels so on our shelves in the living room are vintage Egyptian Urns, Turkish pottery, and other finds from around the world. The wrought iron and leather chair is one of two that came with the house as a gift from the previous owners.

The Smoky Murano Glass chandelier in the entryway is from 1970, the same year our house was built. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in the door, and it has the perfect mix of glam and organic elegance. Our interior designer, Sean Gaston found it.

I’m wearing a silk dress by Loyd Ford which makes me feel pretty. Jason usually sticks to wearing the basics and tends to express himself with fun shoes and crazy printed socks.” - Victoria

A-M: For the second portrait in the project: three dogs? What were we thinking? Ringo loves having his portrait taken, Winnie is a little shy, but Jasper Johns was having none of it. With a bit of wrangling and a few treats later we managed to get the shot.

“My poems have been appearing in print for 60 years in periodicals from mainstream (Rolling Stone) to underground (Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle).

When I moved into my house in Kent OH in 1980, I found the table which was left by the previous owner in the basement. A dear friend cut down the legs & sanded it. I brought it with me to Santa Fe where I lived for 22 years and when I moved to Palm Springs it moved with me. So many friends- famous and infamous- have gathered around it over these decades.

I am wearing a $4000 satin Bally suit I bought at a downtown Palm Springs consignment store for $400. The unique bowtie is designed by Dennis Crow.

This portrait captures forever a space in which I have felt both happiness and sadness. But it's also a space in which I wrote poems. And that overwhelms me with joy.”

“Our artwork is the focal point in our homes; we are both artists and like to keep a minimal design look and palette, this way the art stands out. We are also art collectors. Our furnishings are an eclectic mix of classic modern mixed with Italian modern.

The large painting is by Steven. Mine are the smaller paintings on the side wall and on the shelves. Lips is a vintage polaroid lightbox that was done by myself and my twin sister, Lynda. The Emmy was awarded in 2006 to our studio TwinArt- Ellen Kahn and Lynda Kahn for Title Design/Ellen Degeneres Show.

I’m wearing one of my favorite Stella McCartney dresses that I wore to the Emmys. I thought the fluorescent orange would be the pop of color in the photo along with the red orange super high heels to give me a lift!

Steven's wardrobe was easy. The black and white check shirt- a classic, and pin striped, blue on white pants both from Uniqlo, topped with a Navy blue blazer by Ralph Lauren, with matching navy blue eyeglasses as his accessory. At Christine and Owen’s suggestion Steven is not wearing shoes. It adds a casual style to the portrait that we love.” -Ellen

“We typically sit outside in the mornings to enjoy our coffee and the views.

The portrait was taken in our newly renovated courtyard. We chose the color scheme for the pillows, and I stenciled and painted the Alexander Girard suns on some of them. The metal and glass sculpture were done by our friend, local artist John De La Rosa.

There was a quick costume change the morning of the shoot. We ended up wearing outfits that coordinated with the courtyard after originally thinking that we would wear contrasting colors. I’m wearing a vintage caftan purchased at a local shop and Robert is in one of his favorite suits.” -Jennifer

A-M: Another hot day! We really wanted the blue, blue sky typical of Palm Springs but in order to achieve that our subjects had to have the sun blasting them. We tried it without sunglasses but once we realized that it was impossible for Jennifer and Robert not to squint, we opted for the sunglasses.

“The sign was a kit from Target. I put that quote on it after hearing someone say it one day.

The ceramic fortune cookies next to it are by local artist Brian Hicks. The sun bust on the mantle is an Austin Productions repro of a Paul Belardo (1924-2017) sculpture. He worked and lived most of his life in Provincetown and New York but spent his final years in Palm Springs. I found the travertine marble coffee table in a local vintage modern store in Cathedral City.

The suit is vintage H&M. It's cotton. I had to give away all my other suits from NY- too warm for Palm Springs.”

“The large collage Vermilion is one of my favorite pieces. It was made a few years ago from one of my first experiments using dots of Japanese ink on magazine pages. When I deconstructed the dots, magic happened. It represented a new direction in my collage work.” -Samuel

“My favorite art piece is an original Nail Fetish African sculpture. Nail Fetish sculptures traditionally are found outside the entrance to a home and are carved of wood and wrapped with wire containing packets of stuff and sharp objects intended to remove bad energy from those entering the space. Ours, of course is indoors, but just inside the front entrance of our home. I like that the portrait contains one of my paintings, one of Samuel’s collages and our niece’s sculpture which provides a bookend for the room with the Nail Fetish sculpture.” -Stephen

“When I moved to Palm Springs seven years ago, I had nothing but dark colors in my wardrobe. The light-colored linen suit was a much-needed change for living in the desert.” -Samuel

“The room has an eclectic collection of artworks from the 18th century wallpaper screens to Squeak Carnwath prints made with marble dust, African sculptures,1950's bottle cap people and early Mexican pottery, along with some of my own pots and a ceramic table I made.

“I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in the baking business that has two Emmys. I was awarded them when I worked in advertising. We have a Digital turntable and a stack of our old LP’s. Along the way we parted with some, but the ones we have kept were albums both of us had collected at the time of their release and are reflective of the music we liked most at that time. Think Neil Diamond Hot Summer nights, Beatles and Rolling Stones early albums, Laurel Canyon folk, London punk scene, etc.” -Rick

A-M: As a child, Bianca was photographed sitting on her mother’s lap by Slim Aarons. The shot is entitled “Sea Drive” and shows film producer Kevin McClory and his wife Bobo Sigrist and their family for a drive in an Amphicar across the harbor at Nassau.

“When this home came on the market, we were in the right mental place to close out our Brooklyn life and start a new chapter in Palm Springs. It's the perfect mid-century modern home with a carport on a cul-de-sac, which has since inspired a number of my creative endeavors. George has gone on his own journey of change, first by adopting the name Blossom, and by creating a Zen zoom room for his many remote group activities.

In the carport is Hazel, our 1964 Ford Country Squire, often replaced on cooler days with Amy, the 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix convertible.

We never dress up, so it doesn't come easily. Blossom's jacket was too big, (he lost a lot of weight) so he wore my purple one. I scrambled for a fun shirt to go with my blue jacket. We look a bit stiff- I'd be more comfortable in t-shirt and shorts, and Blossom would be more comfortable naked to show off his many new tattoos. But we're happy with who we are and what the picture shows.” -Tom

A-M: While out riding our bikes one evening in Canyon View Estates, we discovered this shot. The home, the breeze blocks typical of this development, the carport and the car were all possible to capture from this angle. When we went over to talk about the project Tom greeted us outside and the first thing he said was, “I think you should shoot it out here, otherwise it’s just another portrait of two gay guys in their mid-century modern living room."

“We always approach architecture and interiors as a "stage set" for living. For this house we had a vision of high style late modernism at its best. Since our house was designed in 1971, we wanted to evoke that 1970s vibe in the restoration and décor.

“The chrome Plattner stool was original to the house and was a gift to us from the owners. We used that as a "cue" to find more pieces from the vintage furniture stores in Palm Springs. On the right is a wall ceramic by Doyle Lane circa 1960. The Eames aluminum group leather soft-pad chairs are our absolute favorite chairs we've ever owned.

When we had our music store in the Chicago suburbs we often took in trades or bought instruments from our customers. Joan’s Steinway grand piano was a trade-in in the late ‘70s. At some point I bought the 1960 Gibson ES5 Switchmaster guitar. Ironically, 2 weeks later another regular customer saw it hanging in the shop and said to me "I've got one of those from 1952. You want another one?" So yes, I have two.” -Gary

“Nearly all the furniture in the house is from Gilbert Rohde's 1941 Paldao Group for Herman Miller. The furniture is in the Late Moderne style, as is our Herbert Burns-designed house.

My favorite thing in the photograph is my grandmother's painting over the fireplace of the two women. That is the one thing that has followed me to each house my whole life.

The original owner of the house from 1950 was Mitchell Slayman who later married Joyce Maloof. Joyce's parents opened Maloof's, a clothing store in downtown Palm Springs in the 1930s. The vintage jacket I am wearing is from Maloof's.

Blanca rules this roost. She had been abandoned in an industrial section of Los Angeles, and probably had been abused when John found her. We've tried to make up for that ever since.” -Steven

A-M: We rarely shoot with any lights on, feeling that it distracts and spoils the natural light we use to illuminate the space. In this case we made an exception, feeling that the lamps added a warm glow to the room and provided definition to the soffit which is a key element in of all Herbert Burns’ homes.

“Probably the most influential piece in the room for me is the magnificent painting of the San Francisco Bay Delta and Pittsburg Power Plant painted by Bay Area painter Dodie Shoemaker. I love water, the color blue and a minimalist approach to life and this painting has all of that.

I learned about Bitossi ceramics from the local vintage shops of Palm Springs and loved them, so I started collecting them. The two small portraits on the end table were done by close friends, one portrait of me and one of Brutus.

I've had Brutus since he was a pup and he just turned 14- once an unstable powerhouse and now an elegant older gentleman.

I'm wearing a top and pants by Trina Turk. I love the fun, casual elegance of her clothing. The pendant is vintage, and the bracelet is from Italy. Everything I'm wearing was purchased in Palm Springs except for the earrings which were made by an SF artist.”

“I like to mix vintage with new pieces. The mustard velvet sofas, “tree slice” coffee table, and the leather chairs are new. The brass side table just grabbed me- it looks so vintage, and it's such a cool juxtaposition with its rustic look next to the glam velvet! The painting was done by a friend. Everyone assumes it’s vintage because he really captured that late ’60s brutal-modern look. The little brutalist bull is vintage ’60s Japanese cast iron. The Picasso-esque cubist figure is vintage ’60s plaster. Also on shelves are early ’60s Barbie and Ken dolls with furniture from a 1960 Barbie Dream House.

When we first saw our portrait, we couldn't believe that was our house. Don't get me wrong, we adore our place, it reallyhas turned out to be our "Barbie Dream House," but the photographers’ eye really captured all the details we see every day.

My pants are by Mr. Turk and from our wedding- we wore matching pants! I think I paid $40 for the white dinner jacket but it's one of my go-tos for Palm Springs parties.” -Travis

“When we both stepped into the patio to view the property, we knew we had to buy it!!! It is our desert villa sanctuary, Casa Hermosa. It has the perfect pergola for alfresco dining with a tranquil fountain and the sounds of the hummingbirds flocking to the bougainvillea.

It has an authentic Spanish charm and stunning views of the San Jacinto mountains. We spend most evenings sitting on our vintage rattan chairs, sipping cocktails surrounded with nature and our very own grapefruit tree.

I wear silk caftans daily, so it was an obvious choice. I teamed it up with my vintage gold and pearl Chanel necklace, vintage bangles, Gucci Lions Head ring and Chanel sandals. I am all about accessories!!!!

The defining feature of our indoor/outdoor 1962 mid-century modern bungalow is a 30-foot disappearing sliding glass wall that creates a seamless extension of our home to our private resort-like backyard. We rescue seniors from a small breed rescue based in San Diego. Iggy is one of our three senior rescue Maltese dogs.

“We chose an Hermes inspired orange for the entryway because we wanted something happy and fun.

On the wall are some of the paintings done by amateur artists from the ‘60s and ‘70s which I have been collecting for over 30 years. The vintage Mexican rug is from a local estate sale. The low Swedish bench was a find from a thrift store in Palm Desert. I found the Danish wood sculpture at a thrift store in Belleview WA which we use as a coat rack. The dining room is more of a nod to the ‘70s which is when our house was built. The wallpaper is by Kohl and Sons and the chrome dining set is by Milo Baughman.

Chloe is a Cavapoo (Cavalier Spaniel Poodle mix), and Jaime is a Standard Poodle.

“The tile installation in the entryway is vintage from a local estate, weighs about a million pounds, and is one of those pieces that has traveled with us and always has a home. The bronze and hand-blown glass light fixture we found locally. It came from an amazing estate sale in Phoenix. There were two, but I missed out on the other one- but where the hell would I put it anyway?

We are particularly fond of the piece seen on the top shelf- the smoking man known as The Brute, painted by Robert Laughlin on a Halliburton aluminum briefcase- just such an odd “canvas” with one of our fave images. We bought it at an auction in NY in 2018.

Both of us are in neutral with a dash of black… can you tell from our surroundings it’s our “vibe”? It allows the textures and the objects to be the heroes and not rely on a color to carry the story… although taupe is a color, I guess!

Jim and I are not so serious in real life and are a bit on the goofy side. It has been interesting seeing ourselves projected in a manner that may not particularly match the perception we have of ourselves.” -Sean

“I’ve been a rare poster collector for many years. Two of my favorites are the Picasso “Pin Up” posters from the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. On my far left is a large poster of an Oscar Statuette on a red background. A different poster is given out each year to everyone who is officially working at that year’s awards ceremony. I have a collection of these posters from past years as a red-carpet photographer, but this one, from the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held in 2017, is my very favorite.

Also on the wall is a painting called Cactus at Night. It’s from a series I’m doing in collaboration with Cherry Vanilla. The series is centered on desert landscapes that I paint, then Cherry embellishes each painting with glitter.

Scattered on the ottoman are some Stereoscope images I made. A few years ago, I found an antique Stereoscope Viewer and taught myself how to make 3-D images from my photographs.

The Keith Haring socks I’m wearing were a gift and I love them because they remind me of my days living in Greenwich Village in the early 1980s, when I would see Keith at various places in the Village i.e., the Pop Shop, the Pyramid Club, and The World.”

A-M: Arriving at Carolyn and Daniel’s home for the scout we were stunned by what is routinely referred to as ‘curb appeal’.We toured their home, one great room after another but at some point, we looked at each other and knew that our shot had to be the exterior with the rocks, the fountain, the sculpture, the gardens, and the house nestled into the San Jacinto mountains rising behind it all.

“The portrait of Claudia and I above the piano was taken as we completed one of our over 200 Palm Springs Piano Bar shows on YouTube during the Covid lockdown. On the coffee table and on the piano are some vintage Blenko glass bottles from Claudia’s collection. The sculpture that hangs on the fireplace was done by a local artist, Sean Savage. It was tricky to hang but we love it there.

I am wearing a Trina Turk shirt with a pattern by local artist Jim Isermann. When Jim had his show at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, that pattern was used to wrap the building.

The striking sexy stainless steel coffee table looks like a piece of Modern Art. I love the sculptural rectangular design; it looks like a museum piece and really makes a statement. I can see this working well with a ‘60s space age aesthetic or ‘80s glam decor, it is modern and looks high end. This thing is super heavy. It took four men to lift it up into the car, we better not move for a while.

“I love using bright juxtaposing colors when creating my light, sound, and motion interactive construction-assemblage artworks. Since I create social commentary art works, I realized early on that I wanted to have comic overtones in these pieces, to help a viewer ease into the sometimes startling/challenging social commentary. All of the artworks in my dining room are examples of this combination.

I like putting outfits together for myself that match patterns and designs in a bizarre yet pleasing way to me. A strong yellow is my favorite color!”

A-M: Christine: “Invited to see her closet for a wardrobe consultation, I found myself surrounded by sparkly shoes, a riot of loud prints and color color color, so I was surprised when she showed me a smartly tailored beige silk blouse she was considering for the shoot. I said, “That’s beautiful but it’s not you.” Moving further into the closet I spotted the loud loose jacket with the red fringe and suggested that she base her outfit around that. She did not disappoint.”

We are a COVID relocation from Chicago; we decided to continue our physical distancing in our vacation home designed by William Krisel and never left. The photograph above the couch is done by a Chicago based artist and is an aerial view of the “L” Line. We chose it because the lines echo the line of our couch and the architecture of our living room.

Our cat, Woodford serves as our Design Critic. In addition to his critical eye, he commands any room.”
